Tithing is a very important cornerstone of the Habitat for Humanity vision as it allows us to build a WORLD where everyone has a decent place to live. By taking about 10% of what we have been blessed with as an affiliate and giving it back to other communities in need, we also give back to God, whose love we seek to put into action.
In addition to serving 65 families in the Wabash Valley throughout the past 27 years, WVHfH has also been able to serve almost 37 families internationally thanks to our tithe. Tithing within Habitat for Humanity “ensures that funding reaches the countries that have both a Habitat presence and some of the greatest need”. (Habitat for Humanity International) Because of tithing we are able to eliminate poverty housing from our own community, while simultaneously eliminating poverty housing in communities around the world.
Wabash Valley Habitat for Humanity has been able to send tithes monthly to a variety of global affiliates. In the past 27 years, we have sent over $100,000 which has allowed us to build houses for a total of 37 families. As the average cost of housing goes up, our international tithes become more and more important for families in need as our dollar abroad often goes much further than it can at home. The average cost of housing solutions globally is about $4,500 as compared to about $60,000 dollars in the Wabash Valley.
